Cloth diapering often gets a bad rap in the media for beingtoo time-consuming, effort-intensive or even, bad for baby. Seen the ad wherethe baby cries because he’s wearing a cloth nappy and it’s wet? Yeah, so, hereat SmartBaby, we thought about busting myths like this and others.

Here are 10 cloth diapering myths that are just that, myths:

1. Cloth Diapers are Expensive

Umm, not really.Have you considered thecost of disposables? And the fact,that you can’t reuse a disposable? Let’s do some math here, shall we?

Winter is a time we worry most about babies, whether theyare warm enough or are they too warm? Have they had enough fluids and have theybeen filling up only on bready starchy foods too? And one of the biggestconcerns when you wake at 3 am with a slightly cranking baby and wonder “Howlong has this little munchkin been wet?”! Though no one can make seasonaltroubles go away or completely rid you of all your concerns, what we can do isgive you some tips on how to prepare for winter when you have a small baby.

1. Don’t over/under dress baby: Ideally babies need two layers more than Moms and Dads but every babyis different, winter babies and babies from colder regions tend to need fewerlayers than babies who experience winter seasonally. Layering is the best wayto ensure comfort for baby. That way you can add or remove layers whether youare indoors or outdoors. Overdressing baby can lead to overheating andcomplication thereafter while under-dressing can expose baby to the cold andcause a drop in immunity.

2. Stock Up: stock up on innerwear for layering. Make sure you have an ample supplyof thermal innerwear, stockings and leggings and other warmsies!The weather makes laundry take longer to dry and with food spillage, playtimeand other messy moments, it is better to be prepared in time for the real cold.

3. KillGerms: Wash your handsoften, despite the weather! Wash up after changing baby’s diaper, using thebathroom or handling dirty clothes and tissues, and wash well before holding orfeeding your baby. It is advisable to keep a bottle of alcohol-based handsanitizer nearby or in handy areas. Wash Care Made Easy!

Weare asked more about wash care than about the advantages of cloth diapering.Probably because over time Moms have realized that natural isdefinitely a better choice for their baby, thebudget and of course our planet. Making thatone change has caused a ripple effect that these mommies can give themselves credit for! Good job ladies!

Managing cloth diapers can be as easy as you want itto be. Powered with information, you can make this decision or transitioneasier on yourself; baby will love the change anyway! Wash care for clothdiapers is not as tedious or complicated as it may seem, it’s easier thanmanaging regular fabric diapers we are all persuaded to stock. If you have goodwater in your area and you can control the temperature you have half your jobdone. There are lots of great detergents that will keep your diapers clean andfresh with minimal build-up, not all easily available locally yet it is easy tomiss chemicals, additives on the labels and still end up introducing agents youmay want to avoid when it comes to baby-wear. Most detergents contain somelevels of 6 offending agents: enzymes, brighteners, dyes, fragrances andsofteners. And there are few and far between that don’t!

So how do we wash our diapers? Well, depending on thehabits of the babies using them - it may or may not be important to do aninitial cold rinse. If your child is a big pooper, you might want to, if notyou can probably skip it – it’s totally up to you. To keep your diapersbuild-up free as much as possible is to make sure you do your main wash in veryhot water, some people prefer to do a double wash, with no soap the second timearound, it totally depends on you.

The best way seems a bit like this –

- Wash a full cold wash/cold rinse cycle withrecommended amount of detergent.

- Wash a full hot wash/cold rinse cycle with recommendedamount of detergent.

- Run a second cold rinse cycle.

Here are a few more tips that will help keep yourcloth diapers stink free and fresh –

1. Wipe out the inside of both the washer and thedryer with a 50/50 bleach/water solution.

2.Wash twice in a row on hot - the first with detergent and the second with aquarter cup of bleach only to help rinse out anyremaining detergent.

3.Strip once a month and do 3-4 hot washes in a row using no detergent.

It may take several months to decide on a detergentthat is going to work for your cloth diapers, water type and family preference.Softeners are the biggest culprits when it comes to absorbency issues and oncethe softener gets in the diapers it’s a big pain to get them out! If you can,it is better to dry your diapers outdoors on sunny days - it helps them to lastlonger as well as look cleaner and newer due to the natural bleaching effect ofthe sun.

# 1: How do Iwash my new diapers?

If the diaperhas hook & loop closures, secure the laundry tabs.
- Pre-washcold to remove waste and fight stains.
- Wash hot(100F/40C) with bumGenius detergent to cleanse your diapers.
- Follow witha second rinse.
- Line-drycovers and diaper shells. Tumble dry inserts, fitteds and prefolds.

# 2: Do youhave any other washing tips?

- Wash dirtydiapers every other day.
- If yourdiapers still stink, wash again.
- Removesolid waste before storing in pail. (A bumGenius diaper sprayer is wonderful!
- Use onlydetergent and water. Do not use other additives like vinegar or baking soda.
- Once permonth, use up to 1/4 cup bleach in the hot wash cycle (step 3) to sanitizediapers and fight odours.
- To removestains, lay clean, wet diapers in the sun.

IMPORTANTNOTE: To preserve your hook and loop closures, we suggest washing bumGeniusproducts separately from heavy cotton or hemp diapers (like prefolds or cottonfitteds).

#3: Whatdetergent can I use?

Ingredientsin certain detergents may ruin your cloth diapers or cause your baby to have adiaper rash. When washing cloth diapers, always use a detergent free ofperfumes, dyes, whiteners, brighteners, softeners, enzymes, or other fabricenhancers. Using too much detergent may cause cloth diapers to leak. When usingdetergents not made for cloth diapers, use 1/2 the amount of detergentsuggested by the detergent manufacturer for a load of 18-24 diapers. Werecommend bumGenius™ Detergent. # 4: Whatshould I avoid?

- Do not use extra additives in your wash (like baking soda orvinegar). These ingredients are unnecessary and will cause problems in yourdiapers.
- Do not usefabric softeners.
- Do not boilyour diapers.
- Do not userash creams without a barrier between your baby's bottom and the diaper.
- If your cloth diapers are made with hook and loop closures, do notwash them with natural fibers. Natural fibers produce lint that will build upin the diaper's closures. This will shorten the lifespan of your closures.

# 5: Should Iprewash?

First of all,make sure that you washed everything at least once before using. There can beresidue left on the fabric from the production process that can cause leakage.If you have organic or hemp diapers, they must be prewashed in hot water with asmall amount of detergent 3-5 times before they become absorbent. They reachtheir full absorbency after 10 washes.

# 6: I thinkmy diapers have detergent build-up. What should I do?

Wash once inhot water with one teaspoon (for high efficiency machines) to one tablespoon(for regular washing machines) with original liquid Dawn (blue formula) and upto 1/2 cup bleach in the wash cycle. Do two additional hot water washes with nodetergent to completely rinse the diapers clean. If you still see suds, keeprinsing until the diapers are rinsed clean.

It’s not always complexion that determines what colours suitus and the same applies to babies as well. Babies are lucky enough to have abig cuteness factor which allows them to look lovely in whatever they wear yetevery parent and even baby has a preference. Gone are the days of blues forboys and pinks for girls, it’s all about hues, patterns and prints and babiesare having a lot of fun in what they wear now. While it is true that younginfants don't distinguish colours as well as older ones but by two months ofage, most babies can tell the difference between most colours and white. Butthe question is do they prefer particular colours?

Studies show that babies can see colours at birth thoughoften they will have trouble distinguishing similar tones. For this reason manybabies prefer to look at black and white patterns or objects with similarlyhighly contrasting motifs in the early days. The ability to distinguish coloursdevelops rapidly, and as early as 3-4 months old some babies begin to show apreference for certain colours. In the beginning a baby’s brain works hard tolearn and tell colours apart. So it’s important for parents to notice a baby’sparticular fondness for a colour and present them with an opportunity to makeself decisions this early in life. Have fun and let baby experiment, lay out anarray of coloured toys (for smaller infants, just 2 will do) and note if babygravitates to similar tones again and again!

Once you are aware of your babies colour preferences it iseasier to give them opportunities to pacify themselves with colours they enjoyand have developed a fondness and familiarity with. What a wonderful way towatch your baby become a complete and thinking person?! Patterns come in a bitlater though it’s never too early to pick a theme for baby’s nursery and watchhow they relate to objects and designs, yet you will always see your babynotice colour, first! It is these interesting developments that make parentingso enriching as an experience. Diaper Cranky

Babies don’t get cranky for nothing, not even the seemingly bothersome ones. Babies actually love to be happy, occupied and talked to. So if you’re doing all those things and you still have a cranky infant in your arms, just have a quick peek at the diaper area and rule out the devilish ‘diaper’ rash. Diaper rash doesn't always look the same but if your baby's diaper area looks irritated and red, chances are baby has it. The skin may also be a little puffy and warm when you touch it, which could be indicative of an infection. The level of discomfort it puts the child in, can be very disturbing.

Reason’s Diaper Rash Occur:

The most common cause for diaper rash is leaving your baby in a soiled diaper for too long. If you are using a disposable diaper there could be friction from the diaper combined with bacteria laden moisture, never a good combination! The plastic that prevents diapers from leaking also prevents air circulation, thus creating a warm, moist environment where rashes and fungi can thrive actively. This environment is ideal for a rash to develop and it happens pretty quickly. Sadly for baby, it takes time to ease as well, since like all babies do, the process of poop and pee continue through the day.

A few other reasons for Diaper rash include a change in diet, which causes a change in the chemical composition of what the baby expels during the day. The detergent used to wash the diapers (in the case of cloth) can cause irritation and in sick babies, if they are on antibiotics, that will disturb the stomach flora and encourage the breeding of infectious bacteria.
The best way to prevent diaper rash is by keeping your baby's skin as dry and clean as possible and changing diapers often so that faeces and urine don’t irritate the skin.

Few handy tips for rash avoidance:

- Check your baby’s diaper hourly and look for signs of discomfort.
- Change soiled or wet diapers as soon as possible and clean the area thoroughly with unscented wipes or water.
- Gently wash your baby’s bottom with warm water between diaper changes.
- Let your baby's skin dry completely before you put on a new diaper.
- Pat the skin dry, do not rub as that can lead to irritation
- If you use cloth diapers, rinse them several times after washing to remove any traces of soap or detergent that can irritate your baby's skin.
- Follow the washing instructions that come with your cloth diapers. Don’t use fabric softeners or detergents with chemical additives.

That’s usually quite a pertinent question when it comes to diapering! Do you buy to wash and keep or do you buy to soil and throw? Apart from the glaring environmental issues, there is a matter of comfort too. Comfortable babies will usually be happier, learn faster and express themselves better. It’s not just the diaper that decides whether the baby is happy or not but it may definitely be one of the major factors. The age old combination of a well fed and clean baby works wonders and diapers are most definitely the key indicator of how comfortable your baby is likely to be.

The undeniable truth about disposable diapers is the fact that they are, well, disposable. They may add a level of convenience to the whole potty process of the day but, if you think of the fact that your baby will go through thousands of diapers before they are ready for potty training, the cost implication of using disposable may be more then it’s real worth.

In addition, the whole breathability debate over disposable diapers continues, they don’t let the baby’s skin breath and no matter how diligent a mother is, it is easier to overlook a soiled diaper than a soiled cloth nappy. So in essence a cloth diaper that’s soiled is less likely to become an immediate irritant, the way a disposable diaper would.

Traditional nappies on the other hand have been a staple for mothers in India for generations and even now it is probably the convenience factor that drives an Indian mother’s decision of buying disposable diapers. Modernization and a paucity of time along with more mothers out working has made women move on from cloth diapers and choose disposable. It is understandable but maybe not a complete solution.

The first few months are very sensitive for every baby. They are difficult to comprehend and their needs remain paramount, so how do you keep your baby comfortable and yourself too? Create a balance! If disposable diapers give you the freedom you need, keep them for outdoors, trips outside of home and other such engagements. At home, keep your baby relaxed and comfortable with cloth diapers that give them more space, more comfort and a sense of lightness.

I am a mom of four, three boys and a little princess. My oldest is now 11 and my youngest is just 21 months. I have cloth diapered all my children and used everything from cotton pre-folds with diaper pins and plastic covers to bumGenius modern cloth diapers. My favorite diaper is the bumGenius one size.
